At our August 16th club meeting, we were pleased to welcome Colonel Romy Monteyro, a four-year veteran of the Philippine Navy and current advisor to the Filipino WWII Veterans Federation of San Diego County, and Commander Manuael Braga, guerilla fighter during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and President of the Filipino WWII Verterans Federation of San Diego County.

We also heard from Bob Filner, representing the 51st Congressional District and the Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, who spoke about the problems facing returning wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan, whether they have physical or mental injuries, and how we are ill prepared to care for them. First Annual Daylia Vaughan Scholarship Winner: The Black Mountain Democratic Club, representing the communities of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, and Rancho Peñasquitos, is pleased to announce the winner of its first annual Daylia Vaughan Scholarship for continuing education in the amount of $500. An essay contest was held in early spring, and graduating seniors from Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Mount Carmel, and Westview high schools were eligible to enter. The topic of the essay was 'What the 26th Amendment to the Constitution Means to Me.' The winning essay was submitted by Tianshu (Tracy) Han, a senior at Scripps Ranch High School.
