Don't Miss
this Film!
A message from Mimi
Kennedy of Progressive Democrats of America:
It's opening weekend for In
The Loop--a great anti-war film
that has been compared to
Dr. Strangelove in depicting war as madness.
Pre-publicity and
reviews have been sensational.

Unless I
had experienced your commitment and courage in
opposing the war, unless Dennis Kucinich had asked me to join his '04
against-all-odds courageous presidential campaign, unless Tim Carpenter
had asked me to chair PDA's effort to bring the progressive
peace-and-justice movement inside the Democratic party to restore its
soul and work the levers of self-government, I never would have won
this role at the audition - let alone been able to play it. For one
thing, I would have felt too guilty, pretending to stop a war without
having tried in real life; for another, I wouldn't have known how it
felt to run meetings and wield power - even under frustrating
circumstances.
So thank you,
PDA. And enjoy
the film.
The Emperor of Torture, War and Coercion has no
clothes.
In Solidarity,
Mimi Kennedy

MoveOn protest/Vigil, Tuesday,
Aug. 28 @ 6:30pm: This one should
not be missed, especially since it's being organized by Lara Asato, a
member of our club, who lives in Mira Mesa, and is right in the middle
of our geographic area! Come out and protest the state of the nation,
giving some backbone to our Representatives in Congress. We learned
yesterday that the White House and pro-war donors have put together a
massive $15 MILLION media fund to keep the war going! We can't match
that, but we have to let our representatives and fellow citizens know
that we OPPOSE keeping this senseless war going without any end in
sight.Close to home, stay as long or short as you want... What more
could you ask?!? There will be some signs and flags, but bring what you
have.
Where: In front of Mimi's Cafe, corner of
Mira Mesa Blvd. & Westview Parkway. This is the intersection near
the Edwards Theater. (very busy!)

The Save KLSD Rally
Monday, Aug. 27th: This morning a Save KLSD
rally was held at the station organized by several groups including
Progressive Democrats of America (San Diego division) to protest the
possible conversion of Progressive Talk Radio over to all Sports Talk
radio. Hundreds of people turned out, and parking was very difficult to
find ~ that was a good sign because so many KLSD listeners took time
from their day to participate.
City Attorney Mike Aguirre and Bree Walker (formerly from Channel 10
News here in the city) came to talk during the Stacy Taylor show which
was being broadcast from 8AM to 9AM in the parking lot. Both Mike and
Bree spoke to the fact that Clear Channel is headquartered in San
Antonio. Mike Aguirre was the first to speak and he rallied the crowd
when he said it was time that San Diego made decisions about San Diego
and that we are tired of having Texans make our decisions for us. Stacy
introduced Bree next and mentioned that she recently purchased Camp
Casey from Cindy Sheehan. Bree was very forceful in her comments about
why she thought KLSD was being singled out for closure, how our being a
major military town may also be a factor as more and more servicemen
are speaking out against the war, and she spoke of her decision to sell
her corporate stock holdings to purchase Camp Casey which will be a
lasting monument to the anti-war movement. She told us that the CEO of
Clear Channel has barbecues with President Bush in Crawford just down
the road from her property. She also mentioned that we still know how
to take to the streets and be heard. The crowd cheered.
Station Manager Cliff Albert came down to speak as well, citing that
financial considerations (only!) were at the root of KLSD's problems.
The crowd didn't buy that! He said nothing political is motivating
this, and that everyone should support the station's sponsors and help
to get new ones. Many people felt that second suggestion was out of
line since that's the job of the station's sales and marketing staff.
Mr Albert remarked that he was impressed (or perhaps he said
'surprised') by the size of the crowd.
I was able to have a few moments at the microphone and reminded Mr
Albert that had this not been a Monday morning and people had to go to
work, the crowd would have been ten times larger...and that the City of
San Diego has more Progressives and Democrats than any other group and
we intend to be heard.
Agnes Pennington and Mike Neff from our Club were also there. If there
were other Club members I didn't see them, but the turnout was
impressive, and we can only hope we had some effect on the outcome.
Don't forget to sign those online petitions and listen as much as you
can to KLSD. Support their sponsors, too! -Diane Ohanian
