for unemployment, as well as the national figures.

We need single payer healthcare in the United States.  Single Payer for everyone is not going to happen tomorrow, so it is vital that the Public Option be included in any healthcare reform package coming out of Washington.  Agnes Pennington, one of our hard working Executive Committee members, has asked that we continue to fight lobbyists (and their money) and that we continue to let Congress know we aren't giving up or giving in.

Don't let scare tactics (like saying the US will become 'socialist') keep you from learning all the facts.  We are decades behind the big industrialized nations in providing affordable healthcare for all citizens, while spending more of our GDP than anyone else on the care that is provided only to some.  We need this NOW.  Please send emails or make phone calls to Senators Boxer and Feinstein.  Their contact info is on our Links page.  Thank you!

Are you interested in becoming part of MoveOn.org's brand new Council in San Diego?  Forming the council will be fun and easy, and the Council will hold powerful events to push for President Obama's clean energy jobs plan.  Click on this link if you want to learn more:

Past Action Items

KEEP THE INTERNET FREE!  Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures, is a leading force to have corporations such as his control the Internet, as he and others of his ilk see it as a threat to their profits!  He made the comment that he sees "nothing good having come from the Internet.  Period." But Mr Lynton is just the latest in a line of old media bosses who see the open Internet as a threat ~ something they must control to keep prices high, access limited and users in check.

Those of us
who use and rely upon the Internet every day have a chance to let him know otherwise . . . we must contact the FCC TODAY to let them know our position of keeping the Internet open and free and to tell them that we believe the Internet is good for Democracy!!  ***

Rep. Dennis Kucinich's amendment passed
the House Education and Labor Committee by a vote of 25-19,
thanks to all of you who contacted committee members to urge passage.

***  Now, Rep. Anthony Weiner is co-sponsoring an amendment before the House Energy and Commerce committee for an even better bill: Universal (not simply state-by-state) single payer healthcare...Medicare for All (H.R. 676), introduced in January (of 2007!) by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan.  Isn't it time??

Please contact one or more of the committee members below to encourage passage of this truly important amendment.  Thank you!

The League of Conservation Voters hopes you will send a message to your Representatives asking that they strengthen and pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES). This le

John Lee Evans asked that we all write letters and/or send emails to the San Diego Union Tribune to express our support for the "Project Stabilization Agreement" that he and two other members of the School Board want included as part of Proposition S passed by voters to provide 2.l billion dollars to renovate San Diego City Schools.  The Project Stabilization Agreement includes provisions to do local hiring, provide good jobs with health insurance to those working on the school projects, and also provides for apprenticeships for our graduates.   Send your emails to the newspaper at letters@uniontribune.com.

For more information or details on any of the School Board's  plans, please send an email to John at  johnleeevans@sandi.net.  Thank you for your input.  And, please note that  the School Board is interested in establishing local advisory councils for the school district that would include interested citizens who have a desire to provide a better public education for our children.  John represents Mira Mesa, Clairemont and University City.

Take action on credit card refrorm!  The Senate just passed credit card reform today (May 19) and the bill goes back to the House for a final vote tomorrow.  The banks hope to derail reform at the last minute with scare tactics.  Please don't let them!  Click on the link below to contact your Congress person NOW.  (Message from Consumers Union)

John Lee Evans, our member of the School Board, asks that everyone attend the April 30th Town Hall Forum at Kearny High School (7651 Wellington Way near Mesa College) at 7 PM to save our public schools.  He says "This is for everyone in the community who believes our city needs a great school system."   He wants to be sure that teachers are not laid off to balance the budget, that our schools receive their fair share of the federal stimulus dollars, and that cuts made will have the least direct effect on children's education.

Defenders of Wildlife would like you to take action by May 5th to save the fewer than 560 pairs of northern spotted owls.  Please click here to send a message to the Board of Forestry:  Give a Hoot
Critical Deadline!  By May 9th, the Obama administration has to seize the opportunity to overturn last-minute Bush administration regulations putting the Endangered Species Act in peril.  Please act now to tell the President that you want him to act.  Click here to access more information about what you can do.
Redacted: A fictional story inspired by true events, Redacted is a cinematic rallying cry from one of film's greatest provocateurs, Brian De Palma...and it has Bill O'Reilly running scared.
Tell Congress to Stop Big Media: Kevin Martin, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, wants to push through plans to remove decades-old media ownership protections. Senators Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Trent Lott (R-Miss.) have introduced groundbreaking bipartisan legislation that would hold the FCC accountable and put the people ahead of Big Media. Sign this letter and tell everyone you know.
Operation Climate Vote: Take Action Now! Congress needs to move on comprehensive climate legislation. This year. That's why we're launching Operation Climate Vote: to pressure Congress to act on global warming legislation to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution.
Comcast Violates Net Neutrality: We can stop them! File your own FCC Complaint. Tell the FCC to Save the Free and Open Internet.
Reforming Energy Reform: Team Bush has sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi offering a "basic framework for an energy bill that would not compel the President's senior advisors to recommend a veto." Sounds like a threat, doesn't it? Send a clear message to your member of Congress right now calling for real energy reform!
Impeach Cheney: If you support Rep. Dennis Kucinich in the impeachment of Dick Cheny, please go to this web link and sign the petition: H.Res 333 Action Page.
Save KLSD: It is very possible that Clear Channel will be converting KLSD, our local access to Air America, NovaM and other Progressive talk formats, to an all-sports talk station. Here are some things to do:

Email Station Manager Cliff Albert
: calbert@clearchannel.com.
Demonstrate at the station: Every Saturday 10am-noon.

Notify all your friends
and associates everywehere.
Call the shows, local and national, and protest this move!
Out-FOX-ed: In 2003, FOX said "Al Qaeda is in Baghdad" and evidence of WMDs was "irrefutable." In 2007, they suggest Iran "is forging ties with Al Qaeda" and the evidence against Iran is "unequivocal." FOX is a propaganda machine. But as a real news station, you have a sacred responsibility to dig to the bottom of stories and report the truth to the American people. Sign this Open Letter to TV Networks and help make a difference.
Keep Your Katrina Promises: Two years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. In the days following the tragedy, promises rolled in from the Bush Administration to help rebuild that great city and get New Orleanians back on their feet. It turns out, that's all they were—empty promises. The tremendous suffering that persists on the Gulf Coast is a national disgrace and Congress must help hold the president to his word. Sign this petition and force Mr. Bush to keep his promises!
Flawed FCC: Don’t let the FCC make decisions with flawed data! Rupert Murdoch buys the Wall Street Journal - another symptom of a disease the FCC chooses to ignore. Meanwhile, the FCC supports greater media consolidation, creates a study to support that conclusion, and suppresses other studies. Find out the latest in a series of FCC biases, cover-ups!
Drug Un-Safety: Congress went on vacation, leaving promised drug safety reform behind. Bills passed by both Houses have yet to be sent to the President. Lawmakers will be back in Washington next week and need to finish what they started. You worked hard to pass this reform: Tell Congress to get off the beach and finish the job!
Hidden Credit Card Fees / Rate Hikes: It’s hard to imagine that credit card companies can hike your interest rates without telling you. But they can, and they do. Now, finally, you can do something. New rules could make credit card companies treat consumers more fairly--with your help. Support limits on credit card company interest rate and fee hikes!
Katrina, Two Years Ago Today: As we mark the second anniversary of Hurrican Katrina, there are still tens of thousands of families without homes. 30,000 families are scattered across the country in FEMA apartments, 13,000 in trailers, and hardly any of the 77,000 rental units in New Orleans have been rebuilt. To share some of these stories, please view "When the Saints Go Marching In." Be sure to sign the petition, too! Thank you.
Courage Campaign: A few weeks ago, California Republican Party lawyers filed an initiative with the state attorney general for the June 2008 ballot that would reduce California's voice in electing the president of the United States by moving California from a winner take all electoral system to one that allots electoral votes proportionally by congressional district. If we don't act now, California could tip the balance to the Republicans next year!

Sign our pledge to oppose this now.
Sign The BlackWater Petition: Say No to Blackwater and war profiteers in California! "I urge you to do everything in your power to block Blackwater USA's proposed private mercenary training camp in the beautiful Round Potrero Valley in San Diego County...the proposed site of Blackwater West is currently zoned for agriculture...it should stay that way. Keep Blackwater out of California."

Thank KFMB for bringing this story to the public's attention.
Biodiversity Activist: Please thank California Senate democrats for Defending Global Warming Efforts. It is critical that we let Democrats in the Senate know that we appreciate their commitment to California's fight against global warming.
True Majority Action: If you sent an email in 2003, there's a good chance your government grabbed a copy of it. Congress will re-consider legal protection against this in just six months, so we need to show them NOW that this is not the behavior we will accept. Sign the petition!
Environmental Defense Action Center: Take Action for the environment. Right from your computer, right now! Take action on any of the critical issues linked to here. Send free faxes and emails to top decision-makers when they need to hear from you. Once you take action, you will receive email action alerts keeping you informed of how you can act online to save the planet.
Fight Global Warming with Barbara Boxer: "Thank you for e-mailing your Senators in support of the Sanders/Boxer bill to prevent global warming! Now help me build the strong grassroots support we need to pass critical global warming legislation: Please invite your friends and family to e-mail their Senators as well!"
"End The War in Irag" Vigil: Republicans continue to block progress on Iraq, so let's keep the pressure up. On August 28th, there will be events around the country put on by our friends at Americans Against Escalation in Iraq and MoveOn.org. Host an event in your area, or find an event to attend!
